A Very Momentous Occasion Handmade Art Doll
A Very Momentous Occasion Handmade Art Doll
This doll is named after what was, A VERY MOMENTOUS OCCASION! What began as my contribution for a doll themed show at Sidestreet Gallery in Portland, OR, turned into the center piece of a public talk I delivered to 500 people on the topic of DIY in the age of AI. To me, this doll represents all that is glorious about DIY and how working with our hands leads to new discoveries. While I have a long history working with ceramics and sewing, this was the first time I had attempted to bring them together in a single piece and for a very momentous occasion!
A Very Momentous Ocassion is a one of a kind art doll I made entirely by hand. Her head, hands, and boots, are made from white porcelain. After forming each piece, I used underglaze to create the face, hair, and hands. Once she was bisque fired, I applied clear glaze to her head and hands, and a beautiful green glaze for her boots.
Her body is hand sewn and made entirely from wool, including the stuffing and felt used for her garments and flowers. Her appendages are attached with cotton embroidery floss and the flowers are attached with epoxy.
A Very Momentous Occasion measures 17” from top of her head to bottom of her boots.
